Wisconsin Electric fined.

(December 13, 1996) The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has fined the Wisconsin Electric Power Co. U.S.$325,000 for problems detected this summer in its Point Beach nuclear power plant in Two Creeks, Wisconsin, United States. A matter of concern was, for example, the improper dry-fuel storage and some maintenance and testing practices involving an auxiliary pump.

Top military officers against nuclear weapons. Sixty-one generals and admirals from different countries, among them Russian Gen. Alexander Lebed and former British defence chief Michael Carver, jointly called on December 5 for the gradual elimination of all nuclear weapons. The day before, the former commander of the U.S. nuclear forces, Lee Butler, and the NATO's commanding general, Andrew Goodpaster, had issued the same call.
