Baradei succeeding Blix?

(June 13, 1997) The most likely next director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency will be the Egyptian Mohammed el-Baradei. He is the sole candidate and the executive board of governors of the IAEA backed Baradei's candidacy of the United Nations body by 34 votes, with one absention. The only other contender for the post was former South Korean Science Minister Kun Mo Chung, who received no votes, officials said. The recommendation has to be approved by the next IAEA general assembly in September, but this is largely a formality. If appointed, Baradei will succeed Hans Blix of Sweden on December 1. Baradei is a 55-year-old lawyer and has worked with the agency since 1984, most recently as assistant director-general. He is an expert in international law, particularly as related to UN organizations and nuclear safety and verification.
