Gerd Rosenkranz earned a doctorate in material science as well as a degree in metal engineering. Following postgraduate studies in communication science, he worked for around 20 years as a journalist for national daily and weekly newspapers, and most recently for five years until 2004 as an editor at the Berlin office of Der Spiegel, with a focus on environmental and energy policy. Since October of 2004 he has been the policy director at the Berlin office of Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V.
